Configuring Microsoft Dial-Up Networking in Windows 95 This covers configuring Microsoft's Dial-Up Networking for Windows 95/98

Configure the Network Control Panel:

To open the Network Control Panel, click the "Start" button, then "Settings", then "Control Panel", the double-click on "Network". The dialog box should look as follows, with only the two network components as shown. If one of the shown network components is missing, you will need to add it. If you are missing the Dial Up Adapter, click on "Add", then "Adapter", then "Microsoft" then "Dial Up Adapter". If you are missing TCP/IP, click on "Add", then "Protocols", then "Microsoft" then "TCP/IP" If you do have more than the two shown components and you are not on a network with other computers then you can remove them. Otherwise best to consult your Network Administrator for guidance.

Dial Up Adapter Properties:

The default settings for the Dial Up Adapter and TCP/IP should be correct by default. However if they have been altered they may be incorrect. Check the properties for these two network components as follows: Select "Dial Up Adapter" and click on "Properties". "Driver Type" tab: Should be set to "Enhanced Mode (32 bit and 16 bit) Ndis driver" "Bindings" tab: "TCP/IP" should have a tick next to it. There should be no other items on the list. "Advanced" tab: There will be only two properties... ---"Record a log file" will start off "No". You can change this but it is not crucial ---"Use IPX header compression" should be "No" Click on "Ok"

Create a Dial-Up Networking Connection

Click the "Start" button, then "Programs", then "Accessories", then "Dial-Up Networking". Double-click on "Make New Connection". This will start up the Make New Connection Wizard. If you do not see such an Icon, then Dial-Up Networking may not be installed. Click the "Start" button, then "Settings", then "Control Panel". When the Control Panel appears, double-click on the "Add/Remove Programs". Click on the "Windows Setup" tab and ensure that "Communications" has a tick in the box next to it. You should be prompted to insert your Windows-95 Setup Disk/CD and the necessary files will be installed.

Configure the Connection Properties

After completing the Connection Wizard you will need to fine tune the actual Dial-Up connection properties. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop, then double-click the "Dial-Up Networking" icon. You should now see the "Greenbank Net" icon you created earlier.
